Description

This Critical Care Rehab Set of Occupational Therapy Quick Reference cards are comprised of 14 double-sided pages of reference material relevant to individuals studying or working within the field of Occupational Therapy with a focus on the rehabilitation of clients/patients within a critical care (ex: intensive care unit or ICU) setting. Pages are color coded to coincide with different topic areas to facilitate the “quick” aspect of this quick reference item. Whereas many other quick reference products on the market are targeted at a general medical audience, this product was designed by a licensed Occupational Therapist (OT) with 3+ years of experience within the critical care setting and caters to the distinct “OT Mindset.”

Topics found on the cards revolve around adult rehabilitation and range from:
Ventilator modes, ventilator terminology, descriptions of commonly utilized non-invasive oxygen devices, FiO2 conversions for nasal cannula and non-rebreather supplemental oxygen devices, delirium and Occupational Therapy treatment approaches to patients who are delirious, sepsis, common contradictions or red flags for functional mobility in the critical care setting, signs of emergency, medication classes and their functional implications, norms for lab values and their functional implications, norms for vitals and their functional implications, arterial blood gas descriptions, and an 8 step ICU treatment checklist that supports the streamlining of safe, efficient, and thorough treatment behaviors. NOTE: The information found on this quick reference pocket guide is NOT a formal practice guide. Clinicians and students are encouraged to primarily refer to the unique policies and procedures upheld by their facility and/or the medical providers who are directing the care of their patients/clients.

My name is Jennifer and I am an Occupational Therapist (OTR/L) passionately striving for continual personal and professional growth. I have been working in the same Acute Care Occupational Therapist role since graduation from my MOT program over three years ago. In this time, I have primarily worked with patients within Trauma and Surgical ICUs. I initially fell in love with the critical care setting during my Level II Fieldwork placement within a Neuro ICU of the same hospital that I work at, and this drew me to pursuing an ICU therapist position upon graduation. Over time, my love for this setting and OT’s distinct role within it has only deepened (as has my understanding of the immense amount of knowledge that one must internalize to succeed in a critical care environment.) This (my second) OTReference Pocket Guide has been a massive passion project of mine—simply put, it is the resource that I wish I had when I started my career as an Critical Care/ICU Occupational Therapist years ago. While I personally have experience only in Neuro, Surgical, and Trauma ICU settings I strongly feel that this resource would be of interest to an Occupational Therapy student or professional in any critical care (or ICU) setting due to the generalized nature of the content that is covered.

Through my business OTReference, LLC I have been able to blend my love for organization, print design, and learning in a way that aims to benefit those of us involved in the field of Occupational Therapy (OT). As I continue to learn and grow I hope to expand my range of reference materials to better suit the unique needs of our profession.
